Bagalkot Bus Stand will be equipped with CCTV cameras soon
The bus terminuses of the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation’s (NWKRTC) will soon be equipped with CCTVcameras.
In three months, Bagalkot Bus Terminus and other 17 major bus terminuses under NWKRTC will have CCTVs. This include the old and new bus stations and the city bus terminuses(CBT) in Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum, Gadag and Sirsi old and new bus terminuses, Naragund, Ranebennur, Bhatkal Chikkodi and Nippani.
“NWKRTC is concerned about the security of commuters, mainly women and students. This initiative was planned soon after the Delhi rape incident to bring down the crime rate and ensure security for commuters,” he added.
According to sources, there is an increase in the number of crimes, such as bag lifting, eve teasing, pick pocket, chain snatching and prostitution in the recent days. On an average in Hubli and Dharwad, around 10 bag lifting and pickpocket incidents occur, mainly due to lack of adequate policemen at bus terminuses. Criminals roam around these public places freely. Crimes are reported more in bus stations which are identified for the installation of CCTVs in the first phase.
A private company has been vested with the responsibility to install CCTVs with zero investment from NWKRTC. In each bus terminus, six CCTVs will be installed and every bus stand will have a control room from which the movement of people will be monitored, sources added.
Installation of CCTVs in bus terminuses will help check crimes on the premises of bus terminuses. This will also help police during their investigation in case of any untoward incident. Criminals usually use government buses to travel after committing crimes. This move will help NWKRTC build confidence among commuters.
